What is the Standard Size Gap?

Hi Chris,

I’ve been reading through your blog and really appreciate all the information.  We’re having an issue with a glass shower door and fixed panel we had installed and would really like to get your opinion on the work done.  This is actually the second time they’ve installed the glass, the first time the gap was so uneven where the door met the fixed panel and the door hit the shower head that we had them re-do it.

These are pictures of the second try – I’ve tried to find what the standard size gap should be between the glass door and the wall but haven’t found any specific measurements… currently, the shower door is hinged 5/8″ from the wall (first two pics) which seems incredibly large to me.  Also, where the fixed panel meets the wall, there is an uneven gap along the wall.  At the bottom, the glass is touching the wall, well the silicone, and at the top there is 1/4″ gap – so large they couldn’t even silicone it, it’s silicone all the way up to the second hinge and then just a gap.  These just seems like poor measuring to me.

Would you consider this “good” work?  I’d really like to have them do it again but just want to be sure my expectations aren’t completely out of line.

In a previous home, we had no gaps at any fixed panel and a very minimal at the hinged door side, so I’m just not sure why this should be any different but they keep saying it’s fine…

Thank you for your help!

Kimi
